Strength That Shows Up in Real Life

I have a 15-year-old, 65-pound lab mix. She’s been a central part of our family for years, but like all of us as we age, she has slowed down quite a bit.

After a bout with vestibular disease, her balance was severely affected. Suddenly, she could no longer manage the stairs or get onto the bed on her own. During that time, I had to carry her up and down a flight of stairs multiple times a day.

It wasn’t something I planned for. It was just something that needed to be done.

The Real-World Demands

At first, it didn’t feel like a big deal. But over time, I became very aware of what that task actually required.

Sixty-five pounds of live weight is not the same as lifting a static weight in a gym. It’s a shifting, moving target that you have to control while maintaining your own balance on a flight of stairs.

There is a massive difference between being generally fit and being able to handle real physical demands when they show up unexpectedly. It’s not just about lifting something once; it’s about the coordination and stability required to repeat it day after day without injuring yourself.

Why I Can Do This Now

Thankfully, my dog has improved enough to manage the stairs on her own again. But every night, I still lift her up onto the bed so she can sleep comfortably.

If I weren’t training consistently, I wouldn't be able to do that safely or confidently.

A foundational part of my own fitness has been resistance band training. It’s what I have used for years to build and maintain strength. Because bands require you to stabilize through the entire movement, they build a specific kind of capability that carries over perfectly into real life—giving you the ability to handle unpredictable, awkward situations.

Strength Is Not Just About Exercise

Most people think of strength as something meant for the gym. But it shows up much more often in our everyday responsibilities:

  • Carrying heavy groceries in one trip.

  • Lifting something awkward without throwing your back out.

  • Being capable of helping a loved one or a pet.

These are the moments where your physical capability either supports you or becomes your limitation. I don't train just to hit a certain number on a scale. I train so I can handle life when it requires something of me—not just for myself, but for the people and responsibilities I care about most.

Strength is the ability to do what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.
